Benefits to Planting Grass Seed
Adds Value to Your Home
According to The Lawn Institute, a well-kept turf grass provides a return on investment and can increase the resale value of a home by 15% or more. While also increasing the curb appeal.
Improves Air Quality
Turf grass improves air quality by filtering out miniscule particles of dirt and dust that would otherwise drift in the air. Grass blades also trap smoke and other air pollutants.
Improves Water Quality
Run off from a hard surface like asphalt is ten times more acidic than rainwater filtered through turf, a major benefit to choosing grass is that it improves water quality by trapping pollutants while slowing down run off.
Controls Soil Erosion
Small-scale soil erosion makes a yard look unsightly, while large-scale soil erosion is an increasingly present environmental impact. Grass and grassroots are able to keep soil in place, while being a more cost efficient solution than others.
Environmental Benefits
Grass can capture and use greenhouse gases, grass also traps air pollution and generates much of the oxygen we breathe. A 50 by 50 foot lawn produces enough oxygen for a family of four per year.
Tips on How to Plant Grass Seed
- Preparation
For desired results, we recommend a good base of earth. Young grass will not grow well on compacted soil so you must loosen it and break down any clumps. Once your base is prepared, spread the seeds and finish by raking a little bit of earth over top. - Spreading the grass seed
For small areas, you can simply spread the grass seed by hand. For larger areas, use a handheld spreader. No matter the size of the area you must ensure that the grass seed evenly covers the surface (about ¼” – ½” apart). - Watering
Proper watering is essential for a nice germination. Depending on the conditions watering may be required daily or multiple times in a day. Make sure not to use a harsh setting on your garden hose to avoid displacing the seeds.
